What is peak season
Peak Season refers to the busiest time of the year for shipping, driven by events like Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and the holiday season. It typically starts in early October and extends into January. During this period, shipping volumes surge, leading to increased pressure on carriers and logistics networks.
See here the key dates
- Beginning of October: Inventory stocking by webshops starts, leading to initial volume increases.
- Halloween (October 31): Marks the start of high sales activity.
- Singles’ Day (November 11): Significant sales and shipping activity.
- Black Friday (November 28): Massive orders create a spike in shipments, with label creation peaking on Cyber Monday.
- Cyber Monday (December 1): The busiest day for label creation.
- Sinterklaas (December 5): Higher volumes in the Benelux region.
- Week before Christmas: Last-minute shopping causes another volume surge.
During peak season, carriers often switch from FIFO (First In, First Out) to LIFO (Last In, First Out) to manage high volumes. This prioritizes new shipments but can delay earlier ones, leading to inconsistencies in delivery timelines.
Excess volume creates significant backlogs, with delays compounding over days.
Even with more staff, the automated systems have capacity limits, making delays unavoidable during peak times.
How to minimize incidents during peak season
Practical tips to keep operations running smoothly
-
Pick-ups
- Request pick-ups early (1 business day ahead).
- Switch to fixed pick-ups if volumes rise.
- Keep a signed manifest as proof of handover.
👉 Why: Prevents missed collections and gives proof for claims.
-
Outgoing shipments: delays
- Set realistic expectations, avoid next-day promises.
- Offer multiple carriers and delivery options (e.g., service points).
👉 Why: Reduces customer frustration and failed deliveries.
-
Tracking & scans
- Expect scan delays of 24 h +.
- Contact support only if tracking hasn’t updated after that period.
👉 Why: Prevents unnecessary tickets and reassures merchants.
-
Returns
- Encourage drop-off returns rather than home collection.
- Remind that carriers usually make one pick-up attempt.
👉 Why: Cuts failed return collections and customer confusion.
-
Customer communication
- Be transparent about possible delays and cut-off times.
👉 Why: Manages customer expectations and avoids negative feedback.
- Be transparent about possible delays and cut-off times.
Peak surcharges
Shipping carriers charge peak season surcharges to ensure that service levels and the delivery experience are still maintained despite this influx of increased shipments during this period. These additional fees compensate for the additional costs shopping carriers face, including increased staffing and longer service hours. They are applied in addition to other, regular surcharges.
To provide you with an overview of the peak surcharges you may encounter, we have summarized them for each carrier/country supported by Sendcloud.
