GLS Italy surcharges

Purpose: In this article, we explain the surcharges for GLS Italy.

Please note: The carrier may change the shipping prices and/or surcharges mentioned below, therefore these prices may be subject to change. Even though we aim to inform you to the best of our abilities, no rights can be derived from the information provided below.
This carrier applies fuel surcharges.

The following surcharges apply to all domestic shipping methods of GLS Italy:

  • GLS National Express
  • GLS National Express - FlexDeliveryService
  • GLS National Express Return - Pick&ReturnService
  • GLS National Express - ShopDeliveryService

Volumetric weight

GLS will compare the volumetric weight to the actual weight of a parcel and charge whichever is the greater of the two.

The carrier uses this formula to calculate volumetric weight: length x width x height (in cm)/ 3333.

Domestic surcharges

Fuel surcharge

GLS Italy applies a fuel surcharge to all parcels. This surcharge corresponds to 6 % of the shipping costs.

Toll surcharge - €0.05

GLS charges tolls due to the routes the vehicles take when transporting goods. This surcharge applies to all shipments with this carrier.

Delivery at a higher floor

The carrier can delivery the package at a higher floor if you live at a multistory apartment building. Up to 20 kg free; over that, GLS will charge €5.20 per 100 kg.

Non-deliverable parcel - €5.20

This surcharge applies to all domestic shipments.

The carrier makes a first and a second delivery attempt for each shipment. In the event that the recipient is absent on the second attempt as well, a dossier will be opened and the shipment will be kept in storage at the appropriate GLS office. This may happen if parcels have an incorrect or incomplete address, for example.

The surcharge for opening dossier is 5.20 euros and 10 days of storage are included in the price.

For shipments to ParcelShops, the dossier will be opened 10 days after delivery.

Redelivery fees - €2.00

A fee of €2.00 is applied if a new address is reported. These are the costs for releasing the shipment and forwarding it to a new address.

Proof of delivery (hard copy) - €10.20

It's possible to request a hard copy of the proof of delivery (POD) of your shipment from 3 months after delivery and up to one year. However, GLS Italy does charge a fee of €10.20 for this.

Alternatively, you can request a digital POD (DigiPOD) for free. The DigiPOD is available for 3 months after delivery.

Remote areas - €15.70

Shipments to some islands, included those in the Venetian lagoon, will receive a surcharge. To view all the postal codes affected and the provinces they are part of, download this document.

No pickup fee - €10.20 / per pickup

GLS may apply a surcharge if there are no shipments to pick up. This surcharge is levied to compensate for operational costs incurred even when there are no packages to collect. Please, ensure that there are shipments ready for pickup to avoid these additional costs.
