Purpose: Understand what a returned parcel status means and what to do when one of your customers' parcels is sent back.
What a returned status means
A returned status means the carrier was unable to deliver the parcel and is sending it back to the sender address on the label. The parcel may already be on its way back, or it may still be sitting at a local depot or sorting centre before the return journey starts.
Common reasons a parcel is returned
Reasons vary by carrier and situation, but the most common ones are:
- The delivery address was invalid or incomplete.
- The recipient refused the parcel.
- The parcel wasn't collected from a pickup point in time.
- Customs documentation was missing or incomplete on an international shipment.
What to do when you see a returned status
- Check the parcel's tracking details for the latest scan and return reason, if the carrier provided one.
- Review the delivery address and, for international shipments, the customs details on the order.
- Check whether the parcel was sent to a pickup point or parcel shop, and whether the collection window has passed.
If the return looks unjustified
If you've checked the address, customs details, and tracking scans and none of them explain the return, it may be an unjust return. In that case, go to Support > Submit a request for a parcel > Unjust return to have it investigated.
